Día de los Muertos · Mexico
“Choose between the world-famous celebrations of Oaxaca City or the deeply authentic traditions of San Cristóbal de las Casas.”
The Tradition
Día de los Muertos is one of Mexico’s most profound celebrations — and one of the most misunderstood. It is not a mournful holiday. It is a joyful, vibrant reunion with those who have passed.
Rooted in pre-Hispanic Aztec traditions and blended with Spanish Catholic influence, the celebration centres on the belief that spirits of the deceased return on November 1st and 2nd. Families build elaborate altars called ofrendas adorned with marigold flowers, photographs, candles, and personal objects of the departed.
The marigold — cempasúchil — guides spirits home. Fields of these flowers are harvested across Oaxaca in October, creating one of the most photographed landscapes in Mexico.
UNESCO recognises Día de los Muertos as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In Mexico, it is not a tourist attraction — it is a deeply personal act of love and remembrance.
Important: Celebrations begin far before November 1st. Arriving only on November 1st means missing the best experiences. We strongly recommend arriving before October 20th.

Important Travel Advice
Day of the Dead is not a weekend event — it is a month-long cultural experience. And peak season accommodation fills up months in advance.
Parades, exhibitions, altars, and cultural events begin in the second half of October. Many of the most memorable experiences happen before November 1st.
Co404 operates boutique coliving spaces with a limited number of rooms. During Day of the Dead season, these fill completely. There is no waitlist.
Our marigold field photoshoot, altar-building, and cemetery ceremonies are exclusive to Co404 guests. These cannot be joined as day visitors.
Choose Your Experience
Both are authentic. Both are unforgettable. Here’s how to choose.

Guest Stories
“I’ve travelled for Day of the Dead twice before staying at Co404. Nothing compares to experiencing it as part of a community — the altar-building, the marigold field, the cemetery at midnight. This is the only way to do it.”

“San Cristóbal completely changed my understanding of Day of the Dead. The ceremonies in the cemeteries of Zinacantán are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Deeply moving, completely authentic.”
Julien T. 🇫🇷 · 2 weeks in San Cristóbal
“As a photographer, I did Oaxaca one year and San Cristóbal the next. Two completely different experiences — both unforgettable. Co404 made both seamless and the internet was solid in both locations.”
