Why The World Comes Here

Why Oaxaca Is World-Famous for Day of the Dead

Oaxaca is widely considered the spiritual home of Día de los Muertos in Mexico. While the holiday is celebrated across the entire country, Oaxaca’s unique combination of pre-Hispanic Zapotec traditions, Spanish colonial heritage, and extraordinary artisan culture has elevated the celebration into something entirely unlike anything else in the world.

The state of Oaxaca sits at the crossroads of 16 distinct indigenous cultures — each contributing its own traditions. The result is a month-long festival encompassing marigold harvests, elaborate public altars, night-time cemetery vigils, costume parades, mezcal ceremonies, and street parties that last until dawn.

For digital nomads, Oaxaca during Day of the Dead is a rare opportunity: to be genuinely embedded in a world-class cultural event while maintaining a productive working routine. Co404 Oaxaca puts you within walking distance of everything.

The City Transforms

A Month of Art, Ritual & Celebration

Every mercado, church courtyard, and street corner fills with ofrendas. Local artisans sell hand-carved wooden skulls, intricate papel picado, and painted ceramics representing months of craft work.

The city’s museums open major Day of the Dead exhibitions. Street processions — some with hundreds of costumed participants — wind through the historic centre nightly. The atmosphere is simultaneously festive and deeply moving.

None of this begins on November 1st. The full cultural experience builds throughout October, and the guests who arrive early experience a completely different — and richer — version of the celebration.

Our Advice

Arrive Before October 20th

The single most common regret we hear from Day of the Dead guests is arriving too late. If you fly in on November 1st, you will see some of the celebrations — but you will miss the weeks of city-wide preparation that make the experience transformative rather than merely interesting.

The Co404 Day of the Dead programme begins October 20th. Our most popular events — the marigold field photoshoot, the sugar skull workshop, the ofrenda construction — cannot be recreated if you arrive later.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions — Oaxaca

When should I arrive in Oaxaca for Day of the Dead?
We strongly recommend arriving before October 20th. The Co404 community events begin October 20th, and city-wide cultural events begin in mid-October. Arriving only on November 1st means missing the majority of the experience.
How long should I stay?
For the complete experience, a minimum of 28 nights — October 1st to November 2nd. Many guests choose a full month for the 50% long-stay discount, turning it into a deep Oaxaca immersion.
Is Oaxaca very crowded during Day of the Dead?
Yes — Oaxaca fills with both domestic Mexican travellers and international visitors. This creates an extraordinary atmosphere, but accommodation fills months in advance and restaurants get busier. Book as early as possible.
Is Oaxaca suitable for remote work during Day of the Dead?
Absolutely. Co404 was designed for remote workers. Our coworking space is available every day, our internet is dedicated fibre, and rooms are quiet enough to work from. Most celebrations happen in the afternoons and evenings, so mornings are typically very productive.
Do I need to book early?
Yes. Co404 has a limited number of rooms and they fill completely for Day of the Dead season. We regularly turn away guests who enquire in September or October. We recommend booking by August at the latest, and ideally earlier.
What weather should I expect in October–November?
Oaxaca has warm, dry weather in October and November. Daytime temperatures are typically 25–28°C (77–82°F). Evenings are pleasant. Rain is very unlikely — it’s the end of the dry season. Light layers are sufficient.
Are Co404 community events included in the room rate?
Many Co404 community events during the season are included in your stay — workshop nights, community dinners, and guided activities. Some events (such as external festival entrance fees or transport) have a separate cost. We always communicate this clearly in advance.
